Reablement… just a posh word for carer?

That’s what someone once told me and seriously, they’re not the only one who’s thought it. I have come across this scenario more than a few times.

When I had an enquiry recently about my Reablement training, I was reminded of a new starter I met during a care company induction.

She’d just been offered a reablement role… but no one had explained what it actually meant. Not at interview. Not during onboarding. Not once.

And that’s a problem.

Actually, that’s a very big problem.

If your team doesn’t understand the difference between care and reablement, how can they deliver it?

What's the difference between Reablement and Care?

In a nutshell:

Care = Doing for by providing support when someone can’t manage alone and is usually long-term.

Reablement = Doing with (but standing back) by guiding and encouraging someone to regain skills and independence in their home after a hospital stay or illness. This is usually for 6 weeks and is a free service.

Both are person-centred. Both important. But they are not the same thing.

If you’re recruiting into reablement, make sure the role is crystal clear before you do a full interview. It’s not just better for staff, it’s better for the people you support.

If you’re tendering for reablement contracts, make sure you have all your ducks are in a row before the contract starts. That means having the right training in place for all current care staff who’ll be involved.

The skill set for care and reablement is almost the complete opposite of each other and your team needs to know the difference from day one.

Then make sure you have something in place (i.e. training) at induction specifically for reablement new-starts.
